The three major groups of food are energy-providing foods, body-building foods, and protective foods.
Energy-giving foods:
- These are composed of carbohydrates and fats.
- Carbohydrates provide us with instant energy.
- Fats are stored in the body as energy reservoirs.
Example: Bread, Rice, Potato, Ghee, Oil, etc.
Body-building foods.
- Proteins are referred to as body-building foods because they help in the growth of the body
- They also help in repairing damaged cells and tissues of the body.
Example: Fish, Meat, Eggs, Milk, etc.
Protective foods:
- Protective foods are chiefly vitamins and minerals because they protect our body from various diseases.
- They provide resistance to our body against disease-causing germs.
Example: Fruits, Vegetables, etc.
