Know Your Body- Elementary First Aid

CHAPTER -2: KNOW YOUR BODY

SKIN: Maintains body temperature constant or 98.4 °F or 37 °C

FAT: Gives shape to body & provides protection to organs.

MUSCLES: Helps in movement.

BONES: Provides framework & protects vital organs.

LOCATIONS OF VITAL ORGANS

BRAIN  :In the skull cavity. 

SPINAL CORD:  In the vertebral column.

HEART & LUNGS: In the chest cavity. 

OESOPHAGUS (Food Pipe) : In the throat.

 STOMACH: In the abdomen cavity, on left below ribs.

SMALL INTESTINE: In the abdomen cavity, (2.5 meter)

LARGE INTESTINE: In the abdomen cavity.

LIVER: On the right side bellow ribs.

SPLEEN: Left side, under stomach.

KIDNEYS: Above the hip bone at the back on either side of the spinal cord.

PANCREAS: Between stomach & small intestine.

PANCREAS : Elongated portion of intestine on the right side. 

FIRST STEP IN FIRST AID

When you approach a seriously injured person think of ABC.

AIRWAY

Make sure victims airway is not blocked by the Tongue secretions or some foreign body.

BREATHING

Make sure the person is breathing, if not Administer artificial respiration.

CIRCULATION

Make sure the patient has a pulse, if not Administer cardio-pulmonary resuscitation Called C.P.R.

Points To Note:

  1. Check bleeding
  2. It is important not to move a person with serious neck/ back injuries, unless you have to save him from further danger. 
  3. If he has vomited turn him on his side to prevent choking. Keep him warm with blankets.
  4. Have someone call for medical assistance explain nature of emergency and ask what should be done pending the arrival of ambulance.
  5. Cut clothing if necessary, to avoid abrupt movement or added pain. Don't pull clothing away from burns unless it's smoldering.
  6. Reassure victim.
  7. Don't give fluids to an unconscious patient, else fluids may enter his windpipe.
