CHAPTER1 DEFINITION
First Aid:
Is the immediate treatment given to the victim, of an accident/sudden illness, before medical help is available.
Essential knowledge for the seafarers.T
Teaches immediate response to a casualty's ailment.
Teaches emergency medical treatment.
Does not substitute trained medical practitioner advice or treatpíent.
Does not necessarily cure the ailment but is supportive.
GOLDEN RULES OF NINE:
Be quick, calm, and methodical.
Avoid over crowding, deep discussions; but reassure and encourage.
Check pulse & breathing> failure > give heart massage or artificial respiration.
Check for bleeding > stop it by pressure technique.
If shock (due to fluid loss) treat.
Look out for fracture > immobilize, giye pain reliever.
Do not try to remove the clothes deliberately or unnecessarily.
Do not attempf too much to Transfer the casualty to the nearest hospital.
CASUALTY:
Persons involved in accident suffering from injury/shock.
